The Dangers of Hyper Grace I spent this morning (2 May 16) at a Hyper Grace Seminar and I am glad I did knowing that together with the other 600+ attendees, we had a better understanding of Hyper Grace and the consequences of distorted teachings. The gists of the Hyper Grace teachings are that: While these teachings may appear correct on the surface, a more thorough study of the scriptures will lead us to uncover the harms that they can do to their followers. These kind of liberation from work and feel-good teachings
coupled with rock-concert style of worship are obviously attractive to many who
seek comfort and solace from the chores and challenges of daily living. In Mark 13:31, Jesus said, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He promised that the Father would send the Holy Spirit who “will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you” (John 14:26). If Jesus’ words are no longer applicable to believers, why would we need to be reminded of them? 2 Timothy 3:16 - All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, tells us clearly that both the old and the new testaments are as relevant today as they were first written. Unfortunately, it is common practice for the HGTs or Hyper Grace Teachers to quote some scriptures to support their teachings, but they will either ignore or interpret differently scriptures that are contrary to their teachings. If left unchecked, the fear is that more will be lulled to sleep
at a time when the church needs an awakening. When this happens, it can lead some to backsliding at best and the abandonment of the faith at worst. In summary, much of what the hyper-grace preachers teach is
valid. However, hyper-grace teaching is out of proportion to the rest
of Scripture. Any time one doctrine is emphasized to the exclusion of the rest,
we fall into error because we fail to “correctly handle” the Word
as in p.s. It is not my intention to start a debate with this posting since the arguments for and against Hyper Grace teachings are well covered in the cyberspace and can be easily googled.
