The peril of curve fitting your trading system.

Curve fitting involves the tweaking of parameters of the trading system to fit the historical prices to show extraordinary profits. 
It is similar to throwing a dart at a board and then drawing a bull’s eye around it!

If you have or come across an EA that requires you to set different parameters for trading different currencies or for different sessions, chances are it is a curve fitting system.
Indeed, most commercially available EAs fall in this category of curve fitting systems.
The reason why most of these EAs failed after you had purchased them is because they become unprofitable whenever the market condition changes.

A trading system that is designed to trade different currencies and/or time frames with the same settings and can generate positive ROIs in the long run is the better alternative.

It is achievable when you can consistently:

1. Enter your trade at the best price to minimize the chance of being stopped out prematurely.
2. Trail your stop losses when the prices have moved in the right direction to cut loss when the price reverses.
3. Capture partial profits along the way to protect your capital.
4. Let your remaining lots ride the trend to maximize your profitability.

The most important goal for the trader is to build a profitable strategy which on average brings more winnings than losses. 

The most effective trading system is a simple one. It should have the same rules for all market conditions.

Why automate our trading?

This chart taken from the Fxpro website, shows the percentage of winning clients trading with EAs (Green) versus manual trading (Red) from Jan 2010 to May 2013.
It is most glaring to note that automated trading outperforms manual trading at all time and by a large margin in this study.
These statistics confirm the effectiveness of automated trading.

Most traders will agree that the emotional highs and lows that we experienced in live trading are the most difficult to manage.
Their interferences to our rational thinking will cause us to deviate from our trading plan which can be detrimental for our trading results.

The best way to trade the plan is to automate the trade with an EA and the best EA that we can possibly have is the one that is based on our own profitable trading plan.

This is the reason why as a trader and programmer, I choose not to commercialize my EAs but to help my profitable traders to build their own trading robots.
